- Meet Granny: The Sweet Old Lady Who Hijacked My Plot

I’ve created numerous characters over the years, from villains oozing with vindictiveness to vigilantes seeking justice and law-abiding citizens trying to survive. and, of course, the police departments who are determined to uncover the truth. But I think what is the most rewarding experience is when the main character stops becoming this figment in your head and takes on a persona of her own. This is what happened with Granny.

I first imagined her as this sweet little old lady who is nearly as tall as she is wide. The type of woman who smells of vanilla and other baking goods. Someone who adores her children and grandchildren would do anything in the world for them. Neighbor children would often drop by for a visit, knowing they'd be met with loving arms. The entire town often refers to her as their granny, related or not.

She bakes cookies for social gatherings and church socials, tending to her garden with great pride. Her gatherings with dear friends were always filled with laughter and love; she's a kind, loving soul, someone you’re least likely to suspect.

Then Granny came to life, and boy, did she have other plans in mind. Hidden beneath this sweet grandmother exterior lies a terrifying dark side, a side to her I'd never expect. She’s shrewd, scheming, and cunning as she carries out her vigilant plan. Despite her predatory behavior, she always seemed to add a little sarcastic humor, a touch of flavor, if you will, into the mix.

Unlike a lot of the characters I write, her larger-than-life personality is one I won’t soon forget.
